Ok, many of you read yesterday’s blog about the process of getting a new breed excepted into the ARBA. We did that not just to inform others, but also to educate ourselves about this process. You see we may have developed a new breed in our barn.
It started off rather simply. We had a jersey wooly. This new breed was actually somewhat of an accident. As far as we know there were no unplanned breedings, but somehow we have had some sort of mutation. We searched the Breed Gallery at the Rabbit & Cavy Directory, but found nothing close to this rabbit.
In fact at this point we are not sure how we will be able to recreate this new breed. We will work diligently to breed and get kits of the same type. What’s even more confusing is the gene that would have caused this odd looking rabbit. We can’t seem to find a gene related to this trait in rabbits.
The best way to describe this new rabbit is a cross between three breeds. No wait, a cross between three entirely different animals. Yes, you read correctly a cross between three different animals. I know that defies all scientific logic, but somehow it has happened. The three animals are a jersey wooly, a sphynx cat (yes, the hairless one) and a french poodle.

Ok, I know what you’re thinking, “There’s no way this is possible.” I would have agreed with you until I saw this odd rabbit. In fact we’ve been trying to come up with a name for this new breed. We are open to all of your suggestions. So far we have considered a couple including, the Jersey Sphynoodle or maybe the French Sphynooly.
You are probably waiting for a picture. We took several just for this article. It was difficult to get a picture that captured all of the incredible detail of this rabbit, but here is the best one we could come up with. Brace yourself:
I know not the best picture in the world. Notice the feet and their similarity to the French Poodle. And then the hairless legs and underside like the sphynx cat. Of course it has the head and back of a jersey wooly. Again I’m not sure when a sphynx cat or french poodle were near the rabbits but they must have been.
Actually you may have guessed already, this was a does that just kindled a litter, and just went crazy about the hair pulling thing. Yes her legs and belly are bald. Literally she has pulled every hair. Then again, didn’t one of the girls wax her eyebrows the other day? Girls….
